Copyediting
Your book is in a nearly final draft form. Your beta readers have given you feedback, and you're almost ready to start the publication process. A copyedit cleans up usage and grammar errors and identifies internal inconsistencies and the occasional missed plot hole.
Line Editing
Similar to a copyedit but more, like a coarser grade of sandpaper. A good line editor is invaluable if English is not your first language, if high school comp lang taught you nothing, if you're converting commonwealth English to standard US, or if you're more of a big-picture person and don't like to waste a lot of time on the details.
Developmental Editing
You are in the early stages of drafting a novel or nonfiction manuscript. Maybe you don't even have your entire story arc figured out, and you know you need some help. A developmental editor will read your manuscript and give you detailed feedback and suggestions.
Dissertations
In addition to a thorough copyedit, PhD dissertations usually require additional formatting and scrupulous cross-checking of data, figures, and references.
Ghostwriting and Ghostediting
You have this great idea, right? But you don't know the first thing about writing a book and would just like to get it out there. A ghostwriter can create a book from an outline or treatment, or possibly even a long, rambling phone call. Ghostediting is when you've turned that outline or treatment into something resembling a book-length manuscript, complete with scenes and plot twists, but you'd prefer to outsource character development, dialogue, pacing, and mechanics.
